QuickTimeTM animation of Monterey Bay: The green lobes take fluid out of the bay and the yellow lobes bring fluid into the bay. The velocity field was obtained via high-frequency radar measurements made by Jeff Paduan at the Naval Postgraduate School. This data was then processed by Denny Kirwan and colleagues at Old Dominion University; finally, Dynamical Systems Theory was applied by Stephen Wiggins and Chad Coulliette at Caltech. The particular tool of Dynamical Systems Theory used here is Lobe Dynamics, which is introduced elsewhere on this web site. Use the button on the far left of the controller bar (beneath the animation) to stop and start the animation; use the left and right arrow buttons on the right side of the controller bar to move frame by frame through the animation.
